The
archipelago of Los Roques measures 25 miles by 15 miles. Owing to
its coral conformation, sailing conditions are ideal: a 10-mile
long coral reef protects the inner sea from waves from the Atlantic,
creating a huge lagoon of calm, crystal clear water. Each of the islands
has its own natural barrier allowing for protected and steady mooring.
For lovers of sailing there is the added advantage of constant winds
making for excellent sailing without the need to venture into rough,
open seas.
Being a vast archipelago, the advantage of travelling by boat is that
one can get away from the more commonly visited islands, frequented
by clients of the "posade", and reach the remote islands.
In addition, there's always the chance of getting a nice "carite"
(tuna)on the end of the fishing line to eat fresh on the spot.
